Interactive thought-pieces

Some arguments are easier to operate than to explain.

Each of these is a short argument built to run in the browser. You do something, the piece responds or measures, and the point arrives through the doing instead of a paragraph telling you about it. A few minutes each. Nothing you do leaves the page.

Machine consciousness · measurement

The Interview

A machine sits you down and examines whether you are conscious. It measures everything and settles nothing. Every test it applies to your mind turns out to be one we cannot ourselves pass cleanly.

02

Language models · generation

One Token at a Time

You become the model. You write a sentence the way these systems write everything, one ranked token at a time, and you feel how little of it is choice.

Who Killed the AI Project?

An investigation with four suspects, twelve exhibits, and one verdict, which is yours. Why technology projects fail inside institutions, reconstructed as a case file.

In progress: The Cohort Is Missing, An Archive That Forgets, Moses and the Model, and a Hallucination Garden.

If one of these starts an argument, I would like to hear it.

I answer my own mail.
